ANECDOTE
Did you ever watch the HBO sitcom Sex and the City? A one-liner said during a writer/showrunner meeting became the name of a best-selling book and highly profitable movie. Here’s what happened.
While discussing the plot and storyline of upcoming shows, one of the writers shared she’d been on a perfect date. The guy had asked for her phone number and promised to call. Then, crickets.
She was really disappointed because she thought they’d “connected.”
Her female friends were quick to reassure her she was a great catch, and there must be some reason he hadn’t followed up. Maybe he was out of town, or he’d lost her phone number. Maybe he had “commitment issues.”
This went on for a while until Greg Behrendt, the only man in the room, leaned in and said, “Or, maybe he just wasn’t that into you.”
Gasp. His “He’s Just Not That Into You” feedback voiced a resonant truth.
That’s what I call a DIALOGUE NAME – and they’re a great way to coin titles and taglines that viscerally connect.
