An Act of AGENCY – The Better Newsletter #69

Did you hear that Barnes & Noble’s top book for 2024 is James? This novel reimagines Huckleberry Finn by making Jim, Huck’s sidekick, the main character and telling the story from his perspective.

In an interview, author Percival Everett said, “What Jim’s seeking in this world is a recognition of his agency – that’s what writing becomes for him.”

He’s right! Writing is an act of AGENCY.

When we think or feel something, it’s internal. As soon as we write about it, it’s external.

What once existed only in us – is now out in the world available to others.

What once was vague – is now visual.

It’s a way to kinesthetically process what’s happening to us, by us, around us – so our mental puzzle pieces fall into place and it all makes sense.

In fact, know what people say when something confusing becomes clear?

“Oh, I see now!”

That’s why vowing to INK IT WHEN WE THINK IT is a way to honor the muse, live life twice, and make life even more intriguing and rewarding.

ACTION

  • Ink It When You Think It. Grab a pen and paper (or open your notes app.) Brain dump all the thoughts and ideas you have swirling around in your head. Don’t edit it. Just let your fingers flow. It’s amazing how writing can help turn confusion into clarity.

  • Make Your Life, Your Lab: At the end of each day, ask yourself, “What moment made me pause, laugh, or think today?” Write it down. These everyday moments are gold for connecting with others in business and life.
