Did you know that my entire career as an author/speaker/consultant can be traced back to a single decision I made back in college?
Like many young people, I wasn’t clear on which major to pursue. Teachers suggested I study law or medicine so I could “use my brain.”
Except, I didn’t want to be a doctor or a lawyer. I wanted to get a degree in Recreation Administration… which a counselor said was “Not serious enough.”
I ended up following a piece of advice from my Dad, “When you’re at a crossroads and don’t know what to do, pick the bolder of the options.”
So, I picked the path that felt right for me based on my PIN (Priorities, Interests, Needs) vs. the path others were telling me was best.
A week after graduating…
- A former boss hired me to work at Sea Pines Plantation which led to…
- Working with Rod Laver which led to…
- Being recruited by World Championship Tennis which led to…
- Working for Open University which led to…
- Offering a class on Concentration which led to…
- My speaking career which led to…
- Running the Maui Writers Conference which led to…
- Becoming an author which led to…
- People asking me to coach them on their writing and creative projects…
- And the rest, as they say, is history!
Could I have predicted that choosing a degree most aligned with my PIN would yield such a rewarding career?
No. There were no guarantees.
Yet, in my sea of uncertainty, I realized it was better to commit to something and move it forward – instead of keeping myself in limbo by doing nothing.
Remember, clarity isn’t a precursor to taking action; it’s a result of taking action.
ACTION
What is something you want to do – but have been waiting for clarity to move on?
Remember, if we wait until all our ducks are in a row – we’ll never go!
Instead use my my infographic as a checklist to put things in motion so you can turn reasons into results and live the life you desire, today instead of someday.
