Last year, I led a masterclass on how to launch a book with NYT bestselling author JJ Virgin and Elizabeth Marshall.
JJ asked me, “I want you to kick off the program, so what’s the FIRST thing we need to do to create a successful book that sells for years to come?”
I told her, “We need to craft a “Bonnie Raitt book.“
She looked at me, “What’s that?“
Well, Bonnie recorded a great song called, ‘Let’s Give ’em Something to Talk About” that was written by Shirley Eikhard.
That’s the first goal to break out instead of blend in. It’s not enough to be TRUE or HOW-TO – it’s gotta’ be NEW.
And, in a world of INFObesity, we have seconds to capture people’s attention.
So it’s smart to crystallize a one sentence book-hook that gets people to say, ‘Tell me more’ before investing months/years of work.
Good news is, I came up with six questions that we can use to determine whether we’ve got a buzz-worthy book or idea that will get people talking.
