What’s Your Big Idea? – The Better Newsletter #158

ANECDOTE

A Hollywood producer once told me directors can predict when their movies will make money.

How? Simple. Do people walk out of the theater repeating something they heard word for word?

If so, they become word-of-mouth advertisers. When people ask, “Seen any good movies lately?” they’re talking about your movie and taking it viral.

The same applies to your talk, pitch, presentation, product, and business.

Can people repeat your big idea – your most important point – word for word?

If not, your big idea will be out-of-sight, out-of-mind … in one ear, out the other.

P.S. Steve Jobs said, “You can’t connect the ideas looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards.” Jobs was brilliant, and I disagree.

I’ll be introducing a disruptive way you CAN “Connect the Dots Forward” in business and in life in my upcoming TEDx Talk at TEDxBethesdaPlay on Dec 1.

See you there?

ACTION

  • Think about your next presentation, pitch, or high-stakes conversation.
What’s your most important point? Can people repeat it word for word?

  • Ask yourself, “Is this congruent with my voice, my vision, my values?”
A career-making talk shares YOUR EEE (Expertise, Experience, Epiphanies), not someone else’s.

Until next time… Here’s to being better.
