Turn What IS into What IF – The Better Newsletter #159

ANECDOTE

Miki Agrawal recently hosted a launch party for my new book, The Force For Good Project, at her fabulous home in Austin. During Q&A, a man asked, “What’s the central theme of your book?”

My instant answer? “AGENCY!”

I said, “I featured Miki and her twin sister Radha in the book because they are quintessential examples of agency.

“When they lived in Brooklyn, they went out dancing one night hoping to have a

fun time, but they got the opposite.

“The bouncer was terribly rude, the dance floor was so crowded you couldn’t move, many people were wasted, and the music was so loud you couldn’t hear yourself think.

“Instead of getting upset, they used their agency to turn WHAT IS into WHAT IF.”

WHAT IS: Dark, unhealthy, loud, off-putting, almost violent, crowded space…
WHAT IF: Light, healthy, welcoming, friendly, fun, wide-open space.

Instead of passively accepting the script, they proactively flipped the script.

What if, instead of dancing at night, we danced at daybreak with the sunrise?

What if, instead of rude bouncers, we had friendly greeters and welcomers?

What if, instead of waiting in line, people arrived early and did yoga to tune in?

What if, instead of being on substances, people were sober and on green juice?

What if, instead of a packed dance floor, there was room to jam to live music?

What if, instead of staying strangers, you left belonging to a community?

And so, Daybreaker was born.

Radha and her partner Eli Clark-Davis founded a visionary experience that has benefited 800,000 people on 5 continents, and been featured at events like SXSW, the Sydney Opera House, Oprah’s National Tour, Red Rocks, and cruises around the Statue of Liberty on the Hornblower Infinity.

Miki and Radha are positive, proactive Force For Good’ers. They’re not content to complain about what’s wrong; they get busy creating new, better options that add value for all involved (like Daybreaker, Thinx, Tushy, and Hiro Technologies).
