Earlier this week, I was scheduled to speak at a conference in Newark.

My flight left Austin at 6 AM, and I was due to speak the next morning.

Well, that was the plan anyway.

As you may have heard, all flights to and from New York airports were delayed because of a communication outage.

We were diverted to Dulles Airport, and there we sat.

Our flight was rescheduled to 1, then to 2, and I could read the writing on the wall.

The United staff were trying to be helpful, but didn’t know when the problem would be fixed.

So I had a choice to make.

If I hurried, I could Uber to the Amtrak station in New Carrollton, MD, catch a train to Newark, and then Uber to my hotel… A sure thing.

Or I could wait and hope my flight would be rescheduled sometime soon.

What to do, what to do?

Let’s just say … AGENCY for the win!

I was on my way to my hotel just as United canceled my flight and dozens of others.

I’m going to remember this next time I’m at a crossroads of uncertainty.

If I can a) take responsibility for making something happen – instead of…

b) sitting around and hoping something happens …

Let’s remember to pick option a every time. 👏
