At a recent event, a founder told me she was feeling lost after selling her company. “I had a nice exit… but now what?” she said.
I asked, “What used to light you up?”
“I love a challenge. Bootstrapping my company, beating the odds—it was exhilarating.”
“Why did you sell?”
“Someone made me an offer I couldn’t refuse.”
“And now?”
She paused. “I’ve done some traveling… but it’s not the same.”
I said, “Look at your words—challenge, bootstrap, exhilarating. That’s your purpose. Sounds like none of that is in your current now.”
She blinked. “I never thought of it that way.”
As George Bernard Shaw said, ‘A perpetual holiday is a good working definition of hell.’
She nodded. “Turns out, having nothing but fun isn’t all that fun.”
“Exactly. Sounds like it’s time for your next moonshot—something meaningful and measurable to work toward.”
